Capturing a Pokemon is arguably one of the most important aspects of a Pokemon Game. Knowing how to capture a Pokemon is significantly important to gameplay as it is the only way to get new Pokemon with the exception of Giveaways, Trades, and Breeding. Although most people have the belief that just getting a Pokemon to low HP and throwing a Pokeball will work fine, that is rarely the case with Pokemon with very low catch rates. Throughout this Wiki page we will discuss mechanics and strategies to keep in mind while attempting to capture a Pokemon.

Understanding the Catch Formula

PokeMMO uses a Catch Forula just like the original Pokemon Fire Red game. Throughout this section we will discuss this formula and break it down.

Pokemon Fire Red Catch Formula

Catch Formula:

Breaking Down the Formula

  • HPmax is the number of hit points the Pokémon has at full health.
  • HPcurrent is the number of hit points the Pokémon has at the moment.
  • rate is the catch rate of the Pokémon (which may have been previously modified from the use of the Safari Zone modifiers).
  • bonusBall is the multiplier for the Poké Ball used.
  • bonusStatus is the multiplier for any status ailment the Pokémon has.

Given this formula, the maximum value for a (if the Pokémon could have 0 HP) would be catch rate ×bonusBall × bonusStatus. The minimum value for a (for a Pokémon with full health) would be 1/3x catch rate.

Picking a PokeBall

There is a wide variety a unique Pokeballs throughout PokeMMO that can help you in certain situations. Although not all PokeBalls here are currently implemented, they are expected to be in the future.
